It’s giving consistency
Today (April 26th) is World IP Day and the theme for this year is Women and IP: Accelerating innovation and creativity. I gave a little speech in my IP class today and I was really proud of myself. It felt so good talking about probably the two things I love most; IP and women. When I was preparing for my speech I got inspired to write this.
I was reading different materials and looking at statistics and there’s actually a huge gender gap in the creative industry. I’m somebody that gets motivated by representation. Once I can see that something’s is remotely possible, I get inspired.
Most of the women who are doing incredible things in the creative industry today had little to no people to look up to for inspiration or guidance. Most of the people that mentored them were still trying to figure things out for themselves and still each and everyone of them still found a way to bring seats to tables that didn’t have seats for them.
I’m super duper grateful because it gave a lot of us gen z’s people to look up to. There are a lot of women who studied “safe professional courses” but went ahead, against all odds, to follow their dreams and passions and make things work for themselves. Things don’t come easy to the average Nigerian and even after knowing that the opportunities available may not accommodate them because of their race and gender, they still show up and show out and create opportunities for themselves.
The bravery and fearlessness it takes for someone to go into anything purely on visions and belief in possibilities is widely underrated and that’s what many of the women in the Nigerian creative space have displayed over the last two decades, all while being phenomenal moms, sisters, daughters, and friends
